Kicking off our Florida trip
Every trip needs a first stop, and for this one we picked Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida.
This is the first chapter of a family trip across Florida. Over the next several posts we'll be sharing attractions, beaches, some behind-the-scenes experiences and the memories we made along the way.
The place Winter made famous
Most people know this aquarium because of Winter the Dolphin and the Dolphin Tale movies. Her story reached millions of people around the world, and it was a big part of why we wanted to come.
But once we were inside, we realized Winter's story is really a doorway into something bigger.
A rescue center first
Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a rescue and rehabilitation center. Its team helps injured, sick and stranded marine life along Florida's Gulf Coast, and the whole place is built around rescue, rehabilitation and conservation.
We spent our visit exploring the aquarium, meeting some of the marine animals in their care and learning how that rescue work actually happens.
The people behind the second chances
What stayed with us most was the staff and volunteers. You could see their dedication in person, and it was heartwarming to watch people who show up every day to give these animals a second chance.
It made the visit feel less like looking at exhibits and more like getting a glimpse of real work in progress.
